Museums are being called upon to advance equity and inclusion, fueled by the movement for racial justice. This summit will explore the ways that museums are addressing systemic racism and dismantling historic barriers in order to inclusively represent and serve their communities.

A Bright IDEA in Balboa Park
In 2019, various organizations in Balboa Park formed the Parkwide IDEA Working Group. This collaborative model developed collectively led to securing funding for internal evaluations within each organization and creating impactful conversations and change. Presenters will share lessons learned and how they prioritize equity and inclusion despite a global pandemic.

Defining Equity vs. Equality
You’ve Got Mail: How Mingei International Museum reimagined how to serve its most vulnerable communities
COVID-19 has necessitated a major shift in hands-on creativity: at-home programs that combine mailed/delivered art materials, tutorials, and evaluation. Mingei International Museum received a $227,000 IMLS CARES Act Grant in support of these programs. Staff will share how they pivoted, the value of community partners, and necessary logistics.

Access for All: Providing Equitable Hands-on Learning Experiences in a Digital World
Equitable access to early childhood education and learning through play are driving forces behind program development at San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum. During the pandemic, our team has pivoted to deliver on these tenets through new digital programming and partnerships to serve young learners and help bridge the digital divide.

Diversity Apprenticeship Program Toolbox: A Model to Create, Foster, and Support a Truly Diverse Workforce
The Diversity Apprenticeship Program (DAP) is an innovative art handling initiative to provide work and career opportunities for BIPOC underrepresented on museum staff. In the DAP Toolbox, we share lessons learned on centering equity in program design and philosophy, recruitment and hiring, and evaluation.

Accessing Advisory: Keeping an Advisory Council on Accessibility Active and Committed
Advisory councils are critical to strengthening accessibility work within museums. Without specific knowledge, we might not properly address the needs of people with various disabilities. In this session we will discuss strategies to keep an advisory council on accessibility active, engaged, and contributing to the organization's long term success. The work of the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo and others will serve as examples of how to develop, strengthen, and sustain these councils.
